Cited vs. not: the real stakes of AI search

By Shawn Lai

In AI search, the gap that matters isn’t where you rank — it’s whether you’re named at all. When Google shows an AI Overview, pages cited inside it earn roughly a 2.1% click-through rate, while pages that rank on the very same results page without a citation earn about 0.9% — being cited is worth around 35% higher organic click-through, per Seer Interactive’s 2026 analysis of 53 brands across 2.43 billion impressions. AI Overviews now appear on more than one in five US Google searches, and more often on the informational, “should I…” questions that lead people to a lawyer. This piece explains what “cited vs. not” actually costs, and why it’s the number to watch.

What does “cited” mean in an AI answer?

Cited means the AI answer names your firm or links your page as one of its sources — not that your page exists somewhere below the answer. This is the fault line AI search draws. A traditional results page shows ten links and lets the searcher choose; an AI Overview or an assistant answer synthesizes a response and surfaces a short list of sources it drew from. If you’re one of those sources, you get the attention and the click. If you’re not, the answer is built from someone else’s pages — and the searcher may never scroll to where you rank. Position on the page is no longer the same as visibility.

How big is the difference between cited and not cited?

Large enough to be the main event. The cleanest read comes from Seer Interactive’s 2026 study: within AI-Overview results, cited pages drew about a 2.1% click-through rate versus roughly 0.9% for uncited pages on the same page — and being cited correlated with about 35% higher organic click-through overall. Separately, when an AI Overview is present, the top organic result’s click-through falls sharply compared with searches that have no Overview (studies put that reduction well above half). The two findings point the same way: the AI Overview absorbs the click, and being inside it as a cited source is how you get a share of what’s left.

Is AI search actually taking clicks, or is this overstated?

It’s real, and it’s worth stating honestly rather than as doom. Click-through on AI-Overview searches dropped steeply through 2025, then partially recovered — Seer tracked it climbing from a low of about 1.3% in December 2025 to roughly 2.4% by February 2026, still below the ~3.3% click-through on searches with no Overview. So the picture is not “AI killed search traffic;” it’s that the click-through on these searches is lower and is redistributing toward the cited sources. For a law firm, the takeaway isn’t panic — it’s that on the growing share of searches where an Overview appears, being the cited source is what protects your visibility.

Why does this hit law firms specifically?

Because the questions that precede hiring a lawyer are exactly the kind that trigger AI answers. “Do I need a trust or a will,” “what happens at a green-card interview,” “how long does probate take in my state” — these are informational, deliberate, and research-heavy, and they draw AI Overviews and assistant answers far more than a simple navigational search does. The person asking is early in exactly the journey that ends in a consultation. If the answer to their question names a competitor as its source and not you, the competitor is the one who gets introduced — before the prospect has typed your name.

So what’s the number to watch?

Per-engine citation status — are you named, on which engines, for the questions your clients actually ask — not a single blended “AI visibility score.” A composite number averages away the only thing you can act on: you might be cited on ChatGPT, mentioned on Perplexity, and absent on Google’s AI Overviews, and the fix for each is different. That’s why we report visibility per engine, per question, measured repeatedly — and why we’re wary of any tool that hands you one number. Being cited is the asset; knowing exactly where you are and aren’t cited is how you build it.

What this means for your firm

The shift from “where do I rank” to “am I cited” is the whole game in AI search, and it’s measurable.
