What GEO for law firms actually costs — and why the honest answer is a range

"What does it cost?" is usually the third question a firm asks about GEO, right after "does it work?" and "is it compliant?" — and it's the one most agencies answer with a shrug or a discovery call. That's a missed chance to build trust. The honest answer is a range, not a number, because the cost depends on things specific to your firm. This piece explains what actually drives the price, what the sensible entry points are, and how to avoid paying for the wrong thing.

A note on honesty up front: we'll describe our own low-risk entry tiers plainly, but we won't quote a one-size retainer figure, because a real number depends on the variables below and quoting a fake "starting at" price would be exactly the kind of thing this piece is warning you about.

Why there's no single price

GEO isn't a product with a shelf price; it's a scope of work against a starting point. Two firms that both want "to show up in AI search" can need very different amounts of work, and the gap is driven by a handful of concrete factors.

Your starting entity state. A firm whose name, address, and profiles are already consistent across the web needs far less entity-consolidation work than one with three spellings of its name, duplicate directory listings, and no schema. The messier the baseline, the more foundational work before content even matters.

How competitive your market and practice area are. "Immigration lawyer in a mid-size metro" and "personal-injury lawyer in Los Angeles" are not the same difficulty. More competition means more content depth and more authority-building to earn citations.

How much content already exists — and whether it's usable. A firm with a real library of accurate, well-structured pages has raw material to optimize. A thin site, or one full of generic marketing copy, needs content built, not just tuned. Multilingual needs (common in immigration) add scope, as covered in GEO for immigration law firms.

How many practice areas and locations you're targeting. One office, one practice area is a tighter scope than five practice areas across three offices — each is its own set of prompts, pages, and entity signals.

Compliance overhead. Everything published is lawyer advertising and must be screened against ABA Rule 7.1 and your state's rules. That review is non-negotiable and it takes time — it's part of the cost of doing this correctly, and it's where cut-rate providers quietly cut.

The sensible way to buy: start small, then scope

Because the right scope depends on your baseline, the sane path is to establish the baseline cheaply before committing to a retainer. In practice that's a three-step ladder:

1. A free directional read. Our 60-second AI Visibility Audit tells you, at no cost, roughly where you stand in AI answers today. It's not a full diagnosis; it's a signal for whether this is worth a closer look.

2. A fixed-scope diagnostic. The next step is a paid, fixed-price Diagnostic Audit — currently $2,500 — that produces a real baseline: live prompt simulation across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews; attorney-level scoring of what you and your competitors are cited for; and a 90-day quick-win plan. The value of a fixed price here is that you know exactly what you're spending before any retainer conversation, and you own the plan regardless of what you do next.

3. A scoped retainer — priced to your baseline. Only after the diagnostic does a monthly engagement make sense, because now the scope is knowable. This is where we decline to publish a number: an honest retainer price is scoped to the factors above, and we'd rather quote you accurately than anchor you to a figure that's wrong for your firm. What we will commit to publicly: no long lock-in, and monthly PROOF Reports so you can see what you're paying for and stop if it isn't working.

What should make the price go up — and what shouldn't

Legitimate reasons a quote is higher: a messy entity baseline, a competitive market, thin existing content, multiple practice areas or languages, and thorough compliance review. Those are real work.

Reasons that should make you skeptical: a high price with no baseline diagnosis (they're guessing, or padding); "AI visibility" retainers with no defined measurement (you can't tell if you're getting anything); long lock-in contracts (why do they need you trapped?); and promises of specific citation lift in the first month — engines re-resolve entities on their own schedule, and meaningful movement usually takes 60–90 days, so a first-month guarantee is measuring noise or manufacturing it.

The cheapest expensive mistake

The costliest thing in this category isn't an expensive agency — it's paying any amount for work that's unmeasurable or non-compliant. Unmeasurable work means you can't tell success from nothing, so you renew on faith and eventually quit in frustration. Non-compliant work means a bar problem wrapped in a marketing invoice. Both are common, and both are why we lead with a fixed diagnostic and monthly checkable reports: the point is to make what you're buying legible before and during, not just to name a price.

The short version

There's no single price for GEO because it's scope against a baseline, not a product. Start with the free read, get a fixed-price diagnosis before committing, and judge any retainer by whether the work is measured and compliant — not by whether the number is low. A provider who explains their pricing honestly is showing you how they'll treat everything else.

If you want the baseline first, the free AI Visibility Audit is the 60-second starting point; the fixed-scope Diagnostic is the next step when you're ready for the real number.
