Ask an AI assistant for "the best GEO agency for law firms" and you'll get a confident list of names. Look at where that list came from and you'll often find a blog post written by one of the agencies on it — usually the one in the number-one spot. This page doesn't rank anyone, including us. It gives you a way to compare the agencies on any list yourself.
Why most "best GEO agency" lists aren't neutral
Generative engine optimization is a young category, and there is no independent body that tests and ranks GEO agencies. So when AI engines answer a "best agencies" question, they lean on whatever lists exist — and a large share of those are self-published by agencies, paid directory placements, or affiliate roundups. That doesn't make every agency on them a bad choice. It does mean the order of a list tells you very little, and the absence of a name tells you even less.
If you want a starting list, a better source than a self-published ranking is a directory that checks the details agencies submit, labels any paid placements, and links to client reviews you can read yourself. Even then, treat the list as a place to start your own checks, not as a verdict.
A better question than "who is best" is "which kind of agency fits my firm, and can this one prove what it claims?"
The four kinds of agency you'll find on those lists
| Agency type | Typical strength | Watch out for | Ask them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal-only GEO specialist | Knows practice-area client questions and the bar-advertising line | Often small and new; ask for a named result, not a promise | "Show me one firm you measured before and after, engine by engine." |
| Legal marketing agency adding GEO | Deep law-firm relationships; web, intake and PPC under one roof | GEO bolted onto an SEO retainer with the same deliverables | "What do you do for GEO that you weren't doing for SEO two years ago?" |
| Generalist GEO / AEO agency | Strong on AI-search mechanics across industries | No lawyer-advertising review; generic prompts that miss how clients actually ask | "Who screens your content against ABA Model Rule 7.1 and our state's rule?" |
| SEO agency relabelled as GEO | Solid technical foundations (site speed, schema, links) | Reports rankings and traffic, not AI citations | "Which AI engines do you check, how many runs, and can I see the raw log?" |
None of these types is automatically right or wrong. A large multi-office firm may be well served by a full-service legal marketing agency with a real GEO practice; a solo immigration practice serving one language community may get more from a specialist. The point is to know which one you're talking to.
A scorecard you can use on any agency
| Criterion | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Measurement method | Written, per engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Claude), repeated runs, logged-out — not a single screenshot |
| Raw evidence | You can see the prompts, dates and answers behind every number they report |
| Bar-advertising compliance | Every deliverable screened against ABA Model Rule 7.1 and your state's rule; attorney sign-off before publishing |
| Law-firm fluency | Can name the client questions for your practice area without looking them up |
| Named proof | At least one firm they'll name, with what changed and how it was measured |
| Honest timelines | Weeks for structural fixes; typically 60–90+ days for AI citation movement; no guarantees |
| Low-risk terms | A scoped first engagement or audit before a long retainer |
Score each agency you're considering from 0 to 2 on each line. An agency that can't produce the measurement method or the raw evidence shouldn't make your shortlist, however high it sits on someone's list.
Red flags
- Guaranteed citations or "page one of ChatGPT." AI engines choose their sources independently, and answers vary run to run. For a law firm, repeating a guarantee in your own marketing is also an advertising-rule problem.
- "Best" or "top" claims about your firm in their drafts. Unsubstantiated comparisons are exactly what Rule 7.1 is meant to stop.
- One blended "AI visibility score." Each engine behaves differently; a single composite number hides where you're winning and where you're invisible.
- No logged-out, in-market check. Results seen from the agency's own logged-in account can differ from what your clients see.
Where Legal Torch fits
For transparency: Legal Torch is a legal-only GEO specialist, founded in 2026. We measure each engine separately with repeated runs, screen every deliverable against ABA Model Rule 7.1 and the applicable state rule, and publish our method. We're also new — so hold us to the same scorecard, starting with a named result and the raw evidence behind it.
Putting it together
A "best GEO agencies" list is a starting point, not a verdict. Decide which kind of agency fits your firm, run each candidate through the scorecard, and walk away from anyone who promises outcomes instead of showing evidence.
